Decorating with the 2012 Color of the Year
Started in 1963 by Lawrence Herbert, the Pantone Color Institute developed a standardized system of color naming and identification for the graphic design community. Since then, the Pantone system has become the standard worldwide for communicating about color.
Since Pantone literally sets the standard, it’s no wonder that when they name the color of the year, the design community takes notice. For 2012, the company has chosen a vibrant and cheerful shade of sunset orange they’ve named Tangerine Tango. It’s a bold color that begs to be noticed and you’re sure to notice it everywhere this year from fashion to home décor.
Want to use Tangerine Tango in your home but not sure how to do it? tag has some tips for incorporating the on-trend hue on your table this spring.
1. Accent. It’s easy for big, bold colors to overwhelm the subtler shades of your decorating palette. That’s why these colors are best used as accents. Take a look at the pieces tag paired together in the image above.
The bright tangerine color is definitely the focus of this set, but if you look carefully, you’ll notice that it is used sparingly on the Wildflowers ceramic serving pieces. A little goes a long way!
2. Complement. You’ll notice another prominent color in our set is the pretty robin’s egg blue of our Hailey Round Woven Placemats and Vintage Aqua Flatware. The same blue is an accent on the Wildflowers ceramic serving pieces.
Cool blue and tangerine look great together, and you’ll notice this pairing a lot in the design world. That’s because tangerine and cool blue are complementary, meaning they’re opposite each other on the color wheel. The opposing colors create contrast that is visually pleasing without appearing chaotic.
3. Balance. Another good way to make sure that a bright color doesn’t overwhelm your décor is to make sure to balance the color with plenty of white space or neutral tones. On our Wildflowers ceramic serving pieces, the spicy tangerine is balanced by an ecru background.
We’ve also added some Bubble Glass Goblets in a soothing and natural wheat color. White dinnerware will balance out tangerine accent pieces. The neutral wood of a bare table also looks great as a backdrop.
